As an additional service to Hosting Customers, Net Solutions allows you to relay through our servers using SMTP Authentication. This means that the email conversation involves your mail client specifying your Net Solutions username and password as part of the connection. That means that our mail server 'knows' who you are, and can trust you to use our mail server, even when you are roaming on another network (from a hotel room, or using global roaming or wireless hotspots etc). So the use of mail.{yourdomain} for email means that you can both send and receive email with no configuration changes both at home or office, and while you are on the road (even if you are outside Net Solutions network!).

About POP3/IMAP4 Mail Accounts

POP email is a conventional email account provided by Net Solutions where all your email is downloaded off our server onto your own PC. Once the email has been downloaded it is removed from our server. This is similar to how the conventional post system works today.

All IMAP email is always stored on the server, but it allows you to temporarily download emails to view on any PC. When you are finished with reading your mail, the server logs you off and the mail is left on the server for next time. This has several advantages but the main one being that no matter where you go, you can always read your email. The IMAP protocol specifically allows simultaneous access by multiple clients As all the messages are stored on the server it is important understand that all email will add to the data storage quota of your service. Customers who have shared hosting services should be mindful of this and manage their mail accounts appropriately.
